The upgraded version of Westinghosue WGen9500, Westinghosue WGen9500DF, is a highly positively reviewed hybrid generator.

Check out this beast of a generator! It’s got a robust 457cc OHV 4-stroke engine, pumping out 12500 surge watts or 9500 running watts on gasoline. Switch to propane, and you’ve still got a solid 11200 surge watts and 8500 running watts. It’s like having a powerhouse ready to run your whole house or any appliance you throw at it!

It is not one of those massive whole-house or standby generators; it is more like a trusty portable powerhouse or a backup source for larger homes.

The unboxing experience was also smooth; when you crack open the box, you’ll find the following:

  • Handy oil bottle
  • A user manual to guide you through,
  • Some nifty tools,
  • A spark plug wrench,
  • A funnel,
  • A remote for convenience,
  • A propane regulator, and even
  • A battery-float charger to keep things juiced up.

It’s got you covered right from the start!

The control panel on this generator is neat, boasting a user-friendly push-button starter, convenient indicator lights, a battery charging port, a rain cover for added protection, and a VFT meter for precision.

All your needs are at your fingertips on the control panel.

Westinghouse WGen9500DF Equipped with never-flat wheels, a sturdy handle, and a lift bracket, it is designed for portability. You’ll be moving around effortlessly.

Compact in design for easy portability, this 10000-watt generator might be a bit heavy to move around, but the wheelset does help a little.

A generator must pass our noise, fuel efficiency, and load tests to qualify for the top tier. Let’s check the results of our tests.

Noise Test [Rating 7.5]:

It is a heavy-duty generator, so don’t expect super-quiet performance, but it is not bad at all. Here are the results of our Westinghouse WGen9500DF noise test.

  • From 20 feet under 50% load, I was getting 80 to 81 dB (A).
  • From 20 feet under no load, I was getting 75 to 77 dB (A).
  • From 30 feet under 50% load, I was getting 76 to 77 dB (A).

The average noise generated from the WGen9500DF at 76 dB is not bad if you operate your generator from at least 20 feet away.

Runtime and Capacity Test [Rating 9.0]:

The Westinghouse WGen9500DF generator is designed to keep running for a solid 12 hours at 25% load and at least 8 hours at 50% on gasoline. Switch to propane, and you can expect 7 hours at 50% load.

Putting this theory to the test, the team decided to start with propane, loading it up to 55% of my trailer’s capacity.

Impressively, it kept running for 8 hours and 3 minutes before the propane tank called it quits.

Switching gears to gasoline, I loaded it up to 55% of my trailer’s capacity, and this powerhouse went full throttle for an impressive 12 hours and 4 minutes. Mind you, I was using non-ethanol fuel for this endurance run.

Economical and efficient, the Westinghouse WGen9500DF easily tackles overnight power failures.

It’s exactly the kind of performance I expected, given the advancements in generator technology from big players like Honda, Champion, and Generac.

Load Test of Westinghouse WGen9500DF [Rating 9.0]:

We decided to put the Westinghouse WGen9500DF through its paces using gasoline. Loaded up with a 6000-watt dryer, a small AC, a heater, and a variety of small appliances, the generator churned out a robust 9390 running watts. I made sure not to push the peak watts beyond the 12500 limits.

The generator hit a maximum of 12410 peak watts, maintaining a steady 9390 watts without triggering any overload alarms

Remarkably, even though the generator was around 35 feet away from the home and I was inside the whole time, the noise level was impressively low—no significant disturbances.

We also tested the limits on propane just yet, and it came close to reaching 8400 watts.

We conducted these load tests several times over eight days to gather data for this review.

The Westinghouse WGen9500DF is proving to be a reliable powerhouse, effortlessly handling diverse loads and keeping noise levels in check.

While this hybrid generator is proving to be a great product for us to review, there are some cons that I want to discuss in this review.

Firstly, the lack of a CO sensor (carbon monoxide sensor) is not impressive. It is a little heavy as well.

If your needs are limited, we recommend checking out Westinghouse iGen4500 or Westinghouse Wgen7500
